How to Make Biodiesel -- Class on Dec. 8th

pad

December 8, 2006, San Francisco, CA" border="0" height="35" hspace="0" vspace="0" width="292">

Time: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. Biodiesel is made from renewable resources such as raw or used vegetable oils or animal fats which can be used directly by diesel engines. Its production and usage are growing at an exponential rate, and it has the potential to be the primary alternative to fossil fuels for the world’s transport energy source. It is biodegradable, non-toxic, non-flammable and has significantly fewer emissions than petroleum-based diesel.

In this hands-on class, learn the process of making fuel from fresh or restaurant waste oil and examine the inner workings of a homemade small-scale biodiesel processor. Take this workshop to learn how to run your vehicle on biodiesel and help reduce the dependency on fossil fuels, whether by making your own 100% biodiesel or supporting local biodiesel co-ops and small businesses. Instructor: Jennifer Radtke.

Confirmation of your workshop registration, including location information, will be sent to you by mail. If you do not receive your registration confirmation within two weeks of your order, please call us at 707-744-2017.

Cancellations: Any changes or cancellations made prior to two weeks from workshop date will be charged a $40 change or cancellation fee. Cancellations made within two weeks of workshop date are non-refundable.

Message from Carl Pope of the Sierra Club

Dear Sierra Club Supporter:

Carl PopeLooking at yesterday's election results, I can say unequivocally that the environment won a resounding victory -- a victory that thousands of Sierra Club staff, volunteers, and supporters worked hard to achieve.

America's voters made it clear that they want change and new leadership that will move our nation in a dramatically different direction. A big part of that demand for change is about enacting smart energy solutions that will decrease our dependence on oil, clean up our environment, curb global warming, and create jobs.

And candidates at all levels heard the people. Never before have so many candidates -- of both parties -- run on energy issues or shown such commitment to the development of new energy sources, policies, and practices.

Bottom line: Voters yesterday elected new local, state, and national leaders who are ready to take us forward.

America elected a greener U.S. House, a greener U.S. Senate, several greener Governors, and gave a green light to move in the direction of a new energy future. Green candidates were elected at every level of government and in every region in the country. With so many wonderful victories for the environment, it's hard to recognize them all, but here are a few worth highlighting:

  • Ted Strickland in Ohio was elected to replace Bob Taft as Governor. Strickland has a detailed strategy to move Ohio from the renewable energy 'hall of shame' to the head of the class. He plans to offer incentives to green manufacturers to create a regulatory environment that will attract new capital and new businesses to the state.
  • Bill Ritter was elected Governor of Colorado. He will promote Colorado's unique homegrown blend of wind, solar, and agricultural energy supplies to put the state on the cutting edge of clean energy technology nationwide.
  • Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum -- who voted against a sound energy policy, voted against renewable energy, and voted against protecting our children from dangerous mercury emissions -- was soundly defeated. Pennsylvania's new Senator-elect Bob Casey recognizes global warming as a real, immediate threat and supports federal action to solve the problem.
  • In the House, new greener Members of Congress were elected in every region of the country. We have gained at least 20 new seats where an anti-environment incumbent was replaced by a green challenger.
  • Finally, we had our biggest victory with the defeat of Richard Pombo in California. Sierra Club volunteers, myself included, were working right up to the last minute to turn out the vote for Jerry McNerney. Our ability to defeat an extreme anti-environmental incumbent, when no one else in the country believed the race to be in play, shows the power of these issues with voters and the power of the environmental movement in holding elected officials accountable. The Sacramento Bee reported this morning that even the ousted candidate recognized this fact: "Pombo ... has contended that whatever difficulties his reelection drive encountered had little to do with Iraq or Abramoff, and more to do with concerted efforts of environmental groups and other critics who targeted his race."

Truthfully, the Sierra Club played a huge role in helping to shape this environmental majority -- from laying the initial groundwork against Pombo in the summer of 2005 to mobilizing our national grassroots network to educate their neighbors about these issues to encouraging folks to get out and vote.

A big thanks to all of you who played a role in this wonderful day for the Sierra Club, for the environment, and for America.

Moyers on America
"Is God Green?"
PBS Airdate: Wednesday, October 11 at 9 p.m. (check local listings). 60
minutes.

A new holy war is growing within the evangelical community, with stakes
for the earth and American politics. For over a decade liberal
Christians have made the environment a moral commitment. Now some
conservative evangelicals as well are standing up for the earth as a
Biblical imperative of stewardship. From a dynamic conservative church
in Boise, Idaho to an evangelical activist group known as Christians
for the Mountains in West Virginia, grassroots believers are speaking out.
So are some conservative evangelical leaders at the national level who
have called for action to stop global warming. But they are being met
head-on with opposition from religious right political figures like
Jerry Falwell and James Dobson, who are pillars of the right-wing
coalition that adamantly supports the Bush administration in
downplaying the threat of global warming. The political stakes are high: three
out of every four self-identified white evangelical voters cast their
ballots for George W. Bush in 2004. The program explores how a serious
split among conservative evangelicals over the environment and global
warming could reshape American politics.

SAN FRANCISCO (September 27, 2006) -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger penned his name on the nation's most ambitious effort to combat global warming at a bill-signing ceremony today on Treasure Island in San Francisco. The law's enactment marks a turning point in international efforts to solve the world's most pressing environmental problem, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Environmental Defense, the environmental groups that sponsored the legislation. It caps a months-long campaign to set the nation's first statewide limits on emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping pollution.

Global Warming: California Sues Automakers

California’s attorney general says the products of the six biggest

auto companies are responsible for nearly a third of the state’s emissions.

Published: September 21, 2006

"California, which has battled the automotive industry over new global warming regulations for years, sued the world’s six-largest automakers yesterday, demanding that they pay for environmental damage caused by the emissions of their vehicles."

“Global warming is causing significant harm to California’s environment, economy, agriculture and public health,” said the state’s attorney general, Bill Lockyer.

“Vehicle emissions are the single most rapidly growing source of the carbon emissions contributing to global warming, yet the federal government and automakers have refused to act.”

Taking Care of Business

California passed the landmark California Global Warming Solutions Act recently, and as California goes, so goes the nation -- at least in theory. In reality, things will move more slowly than most concerned citizens would like -- the California law doesn't even really kick in until 2012.

It's certainly not too soon. Business leaders are increasingly concerned about the business impacts of climate change, including the uncertainty that comes from not knowing how to plan for potential changes in regulations. California's move could help, telegraphing where national policy might be headed.

The law also signaled a growing power of smaller companies in environmental debates, as Byron Kennard writes. One likely reason for small businesses' support of greenhouse gas regulation: The law is expected to unleash a new wave of business opportunity, and small, innovative companies stand to claim a good piece of the action.

It's a classic win-win: Business and society aligned with environmentalists in a manner that offers hope and promise for all.

Sierra Club Chronicles

from
http://www.sierraclubtv.org/

Dear Sierra Club Supporter,

Daryl HannahWhen I signed up to be part of the Sierra Club's new TV series, I did so because I believe -- as you do -- that we need to protect our clean air, water, and open space for future generations.

As host of Sierra Club Chronicles, I learned of inspiring stories of every-day heroes who are fighting David vs. Goliath battles against big polluters -- and winning.

I began to wonder -- why aren't we hearing about these stories more often? There has never been a more urgent time for us to share stories of hope and inspiration with our friends and neighbors so that we are reminded of our core value: every person can make a difference. There are those out there who want us to feel like saving our environment is a lost cause, so that we won't try to protect our communities. Will you help me prove them wrong?

Novato Transit Changes

for more info

New Route 52 (was served by Route 57 and Route 59)

With new Routes 49, 51, and 52, weekday connections between Route 51 and Route 49 and the weekend connection between Route 52 and Route 49 ensure that Novato residents only need to take one bus to access to key community destinations including Kaiser Hospital (both Terra Linda and Novato campuses), Northgate Mall, Marin Civic Center, as well as the San Rafael Transit Center for connections to other routes.

Local Route 49: Route 49 serves Hamilton and areas of Northern San Rafael including Kaiser, Northgate Mall, Civic Center, Dominican University, Grand Avenue and the San Rafael Transit Center. Route 49 increases service to Hamilton with weekday service that includes 15 northbound and 15 southbound trips to Hamilton, Saturday service that includes 13 northbound and 13 southbound trips to Hamilton and Sunday/Holiday service that includes 12 northbound and 12 southbound trips with buses operating every 60 minutes.

Local Route 51 (replaces Route 53 and Route 55): Route 51 will operate weekday service only every 60 minutes, between approximately 7 am and 9 pm, as a local circulator covering much of Novato and connecting San Marin, Downtown Novato, Vintage Oaks Shopping Center, Indian Valley College, and Hamilton. From the Ignacio Highway 101 bus pads, it will serve Ignacio Blvd, Indian Valley College, Sunset Blvd, Rowland Blvd, Vintage Oaks, Sutter Novato Medical Center, and South Novato Blvd to downtown Novato and San Marin. Service will no longer be provided to Bel Marin Keys. South of Ignacio, Route 51 becomes Route 49 and continues to serve Hamilton and areas of Northern San Rafael including Kaiser, Northgate Mall, Civic Center, Dominican University, Grand Avenue and the San Rafael Transit Center. New Route 51 will operate hourly on weekdays between approximately 7 am and 8 pm.

Highlights of Route 51

Increased evening service to San Marin is provided on new Route 51 with the addition of 2 northbound weekday trips and 3 new southbound weekday trips to San Marin resulting in service that operates up to approximately 9 pm, or 3 hours later than the current service.

Increased service to Indian Valley College

is provided with 4 afternoon and evening trips to Indian Valley College.

Less frequent service to Vintage Oaks

with weekday service frequencies changing from half-hourly service to hourly service.

There will be no service to Bel Marin Keys.

New Marin County Transit Local Route 52:
New Route 52 will provide direct service between Ignacio and an important bus transfer point at Redwood & Grant with buses operating every 30 minutes on weekdays and 60 minute on weekends. New Route 52 will operate between approximately 6 am to 8 pm on weekdays and 8 am to 8 pm on weekends.

Weekday Route 52

New Route 52 will include service on Redwood Blvd north to Olive Ave where it will serve the new Trader Joe’s. To the south from Ignacio (Enfrente & Salvatore), new Route 52 will extend along Alameda del Prado and Nave Drive to provide service to a portion of former Route 59.

Weekends/Holidays Only Route 52

New Route 52 will be extended to Vintage Oaks Shopping Center with 14 trips on Saturdays and 12 trips on Sundays/Holidays. On weekends, Route 52 is connected to Route 49 which continues south from Ignacio to serve Hamilton and areas of Northern San Rafael including Kaiser, Northgate Mall, Civic Center, Dominican University, Grand Avenue, and the San Rafael Transit Center.
