Sierra Club Chronicles

from
http://www.sierraclubtv.org/

Dear Sierra Club Supporter,

Daryl HannahWhen I signed up to be part of the Sierra Club's new TV series, I did so because I believe -- as you do -- that we need to protect our clean air, water, and open space for future generations.

As host of Sierra Club Chronicles, I learned of inspiring stories of every-day heroes who are fighting David vs. Goliath battles against big polluters -- and winning.

I began to wonder -- why aren't we hearing about these stories more often? There has never been a more urgent time for us to share stories of hope and inspiration with our friends and neighbors so that we are reminded of our core value: every person can make a difference. There are those out there who want us to feel like saving our environment is a lost cause, so that we won't try to protect our communities. Will you help me prove them wrong?

If you sign up to host a house-party to screen Chronicles for your friends, we'll send you a free copy of the 30-minute episode of your choice so that you can help share these inspiring stories. Or, you can order the entire first-season on DVD. And check out our website for tools to help you take action.

Sierra Club Chronicles shows us heroes who are making a difference in their communities. You can too. It's easy. Help us spread the word today.

Novato Transit Changes

for more info

New Route 52 (was served by Route 57 and Route 59)

With new Routes 49, 51, and 52, weekday connections between Route 51 and Route 49 and the weekend connection between Route 52 and Route 49 ensure that Novato residents only need to take one bus to access to key community destinations including Kaiser Hospital (both Terra Linda and Novato campuses), Northgate Mall, Marin Civic Center, as well as the San Rafael Transit Center for connections to other routes.

Local Route 49: Route 49 serves Hamilton and areas of Northern San Rafael including Kaiser, Northgate Mall, Civic Center, Dominican University, Grand Avenue and the San Rafael Transit Center. Route 49 increases service to Hamilton with weekday service that includes 15 northbound and 15 southbound trips to Hamilton, Saturday service that includes 13 northbound and 13 southbound trips to Hamilton and Sunday/Holiday service that includes 12 northbound and 12 southbound trips with buses operating every 60 minutes.

Local Route 51 (replaces Route 53 and Route 55): Route 51 will operate weekday service only every 60 minutes, between approximately 7 am and 9 pm, as a local circulator covering much of Novato and connecting San Marin, Downtown Novato, Vintage Oaks Shopping Center, Indian Valley College, and Hamilton. From the Ignacio Highway 101 bus pads, it will serve Ignacio Blvd, Indian Valley College, Sunset Blvd, Rowland Blvd, Vintage Oaks, Sutter Novato Medical Center, and South Novato Blvd to downtown Novato and San Marin. Service will no longer be provided to Bel Marin Keys. South of Ignacio, Route 51 becomes Route 49 and continues to serve Hamilton and areas of Northern San Rafael including Kaiser, Northgate Mall, Civic Center, Dominican University, Grand Avenue and the San Rafael Transit Center. New Route 51 will operate hourly on weekdays between approximately 7 am and 8 pm.

Highlights of Route 51

Increased evening service to San Marin is provided on new Route 51 with the addition of 2 northbound weekday trips and 3 new southbound weekday trips to San Marin resulting in service that operates up to approximately 9 pm, or 3 hours later than the current service.

Increased service to Indian Valley College

is provided with 4 afternoon and evening trips to Indian Valley College.

Less frequent service to Vintage Oaks

with weekday service frequencies changing from half-hourly service to hourly service.

There will be no service to Bel Marin Keys.

New Marin County Transit Local Route 52:
New Route 52 will provide direct service between Ignacio and an important bus transfer point at Redwood & Grant with buses operating every 30 minutes on weekdays and 60 minute on weekends. New Route 52 will operate between approximately 6 am to 8 pm on weekdays and 8 am to 8 pm on weekends.

Weekday Route 52

New Route 52 will include service on Redwood Blvd north to Olive Ave where it will serve the new Trader Joe’s. To the south from Ignacio (Enfrente & Salvatore), new Route 52 will extend along Alameda del Prado and Nave Drive to provide service to a portion of former Route 59.

Weekends/Holidays Only Route 52

New Route 52 will be extended to Vintage Oaks Shopping Center with 14 trips on Saturdays and 12 trips on Sundays/Holidays. On weekends, Route 52 is connected to Route 49 which continues south from Ignacio to serve Hamilton and areas of Northern San Rafael including Kaiser, Northgate Mall, Civic Center, Dominican University, Grand Avenue, and the San Rafael Transit Center.

Wal-Mart: Greening or Greenwashing

I was listening to Eco Talk over a week ago, and Betsy Rosenberg was positively gushing about how environmentally conscious Wal-Mart was becoming.
Andy Ruben, their VP of Sustainability, impressed me. Are we being bamboozled. Or will we see Richlite and Skyside Studios in the big boxes? Let me count the moments. . . until that happens.

Rubber Sidewalks Go Where Concrete Fears To Tread

7/1/2/06 USA Edition

by Matt Bradley

"Although making sidewalks out of rubber seemed "kind of preposterous," Valeriano acted on the idea in 1998. Thanks to some partnerships and public grants, his rubber reveries are now very much a reality. Some 130,000 square feet of rubberized sidewalks grace about 60 North American cities, giving local governments an alternative to concrete and its attendant pitfalls, such as rising prices, exorbitant trip-and-fall lawsuits, and a trail of chopped-down urban trees.
]

"In the early days, whenever you'd say that to someone, they'd just burst out laughing," says Lindsay Smith of her company, Rubbersidewalks Inc., which she founded in 2001 with inspiration from Valeriano's vision. "There would be disbelief at first, because we think of sidewalks as synonymous with concrete."

Ms. Smith's company, a for-profit firm based out of Gardena, Calif., recycles discarded tires to make premolded sidewalk pavers - which she uses as a big selling point.

Unlike concrete, which is poured and set on location, the prefab rubber squares arrive from its California factory and are cut to fit. Installers usually place Rubbersidewalks pavers over a bed of crushed granite and connect the pavers using interlocking dowels. The result: a sidewalk with a two-inch-deep footprint - far shallower than its concrete cousins. To repair a rubber sidewalk, workers simply unlock the dowels and remove the individual paver.>

Each square foot of rubberized sidewalk contains almost one discarded tire. Americans generate about 290 million waste tires a year, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association in Washington - many of which languish in junk yards or are burned. As Smith sees it, there should be no shortage of rubber solutions.

"Our goal is to have rubber sidewalks in every municipality in the United States, to eliminate the problems that concrete causes," Smith says. "I think in five years, there will be rubber sidewalks everywhere."

Another reason Smith classifies her firm as a "green tech" company is its service to urban foliage. When faced with replacing sidewalks or razing street-side trees, many cities choose the latter, less-expensive option.. . .'

Woolsey: Congress Never Authorized Occupation

Washington, D.C.

One of the most outspoken critics of the war in Iraq, Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey (D-Petaluma) today introduced H.R. 5875, legislation that would repeal the President's War Powers for the Iraq War.

While the Congress authorized President Bush to wage war against Iraq in 2002, the original authorization did not anticipate an open-ended U.S. military campaign against Iraq, or the occupation that currently exists.

"Six weeks after we invaded Iraq, President Bush stood aboard an aircraft carrier before a banner that read 'Mission Accomplished,' declaring that 'major combat operations in Iraq are over,' Woolsey said.

"From that moment on, we were no longer fighting a war, but rather participating in an occupation. You can not win an occupation!"

Not only did Congress not authorize the long-term occupation of Iraq, but our troops' presence is contributing to the state of civil war that exists in the country.

According to the United Nations, the violence in Iraq is increasing, with an average of 100 Iraqis dying every day.

"Rescinding the President's War Powers in Iraq is the least that we can do for our troops, and for their families who anxiously await their return," Woolsey said.

"With over 2,550 brave men and women having given their lives, and thousands seriously wounded, how many more must die before we put an end to this madness?

"By repealing the Iraq War Powers, Congress would resume its Constitutional role overseeing the use of military force, and would reassert its authority by bringing our troops home."

Woolsey was joined by 18 other original co-sponsors of the legislation, in no particular order they include: Barbara Lee (CA); Dennis Kucinich (OH); Maxine Waters (CA); Maurice Hinchey (NY); James Moran (VA); Major Owens (NY); Cynthia McKinney (GA); Fortney "Pete" Stark (CA); Bob Filner (CA); Julia Carson (IN); Chaka Fattah (PA); Carolyn Kilpatrick (MI); Marty Meehan (MA); Donald Payne (NJ); Jose Serrano (NY); Danny Davis (IL); David Wu (OR) and Sheila Jackson Lee (TX).

energy independence

Just as the famous “shot heard 'round the world” that marked the start of the American Revolutionary War was fired in Concord, Massachusetts, we may again look back to the Commonwealth as the beginning of a revolution in attitudes on global warming.
For it is Massachusetts’s challenge to the federal government’s incomprehensible policy on global warming that will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court which may change forever the way we look at global warming pollution.
On the same day the Supreme Court accepted this court case, a bizarre tropical weather system drenched the nation’s capital, backing up traffic, closing federal buildings and toppling a 100-year-old elm tree on the White House lawn.
Why the heavy rains?
Warmer temperatures mean more evaporation and more humidity that gets released in the form of torrential rain. In the spirit of 1776, Massachusetts and 10 other states bravely took it upon themselves to stop this pollution by requiring car manufacturers to produce cleaner cars that are more efficient and cheaper to operate.
That’s when the federal government stepped in and told them they had no legal authority, setting up the court case that will be heard 'round the world'.
Exactly 230 years ago, we declared our independence from British rule. It was self-evident then that there was a better way: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Today, brave Americans like you are standing up and saying there’s a better way:
Renewable Energy, Conservation and the Pursuit of a Safe Climate.
Send this message to five American Patriots urging them to sign up for the Stop Global Warming March.
Happy Independence Day.

"Oil Free" Congress Day

From MoveOn:
"Tomorrow is the big day: thousands of MoveOn members from Nashville, Tennessee to Phoenix, Arizona will come together at more than 300 rallies across the country to demand an "oil-free" future.
"Tomorrow's National Day of Action is really important because this weekend is the 4th of July holiday and gas prices are on everyone's minds. We need to seize this moment to make sure the media and the public know that the Republican addiction to oil money is keeping gas prices high and holding America back from the clean energy future that we desperately need. impressive body of work includes the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los

Supes Race

Is the race for Supervisor heating up, or just blowing smoke!?! Where there's fire, there's Fahrenheit 451*. Instead of burning books, however let's hope that Novatans will be buying--and reading them--with news that Lalanne Group is negotiating to bring Book Passage to the old decrepit train station next to where the Whole Foods store will be. Lots of traffic, lots of lattes, chickens, moisturizers, pound for pound, livre for libre. . .what will become of SMART in all this?
It is a farrago, a veritable pig's stew--and how sustainable is it without some plan to put the cars away, somewhere far. More than just into a new parking garage.
"Book Passage confirms Novato plans" http://www.marinij.com/fastsearchresults//ci_3859288

You may aver, here's what the Marin Bike Coalition had to say about politics in the County in General--

"Despite Marin's wealth, high levels of education and sophistication, rarely are the actions of Marin local government held up as national examples of high achievement. . . .**"

The latest controversy about who said what, when and where about Whole Foods--
see "Supervisor's race heats up: Arnold, Eklund trade accusations" in the IJ is so, so, so dumb. . . just look at the comic strip called Grant Avenue, and tell me if we're not in "Doonesbury," by way of Main Street.***

The latest poll results at the Novato Advance website--
Who would you favor in the June primary election for Marin County Supervisor?
Barry Buckley
(16 Votes, 4%)
Pat Eklund
(234 Votes, 60%)
Judy Arnold
(138 Votes, 36%)
http://novatoadvance.com/?poll=4

*I mean he got mad at Roger Moore for coopting the title of his most famous novel, but please forgive Ray Bradbury. Now what if Godard had made the movie instead of
Truffaut? What if Copperfield's instead of Book Passage?
***I mean Upton Sinclair's version, although I would take "Our Town," (by Thornton Wilder), slice it, dice it, thrown it a blender with Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Book Passage, and then drink it on the patio at Moylan's

Novato: Sic Transit, Temper, Tempus

I recently participated in one of the Public Comment sessions for the revised Marin County Transit Plan. and here are some of my light reflections over the changes
--We still don't know how to decide how many residents of Sonoma County we want to attract to Marin via bus, do we? We sure don't need more of them to come by car, though. That's why the route that serves to bring them to, and through here – the glorious workhorse the 80 -- should increase its frequency to every half hour during the main part of the day. Once an hour is just not convenient to be a viable alternative to the automobile.
--Turning the free County Shuttle Bus route that runs from the San Rafael Transit Center to the Offices on Redwood Drive off of Smith Ranch Road into a full fledged route may be an excellent idea, particularly if it can link Kaiser with the Sutter satellite facility on the east side of 101 in Terra Linda. However, I have some reservations. What about extending it to Novato--at least Hamilton--and how are the least affluent in our community going to handle to additional burden of paying for each trip.
--Maybe the Transit District should consider being more generous in passing out passes to patrons of the Social Services in Terra Linda, or let them ride for free.
--Tactile directional or warning tiles for the blind and disabled on the pavement at the transit stops should be extensively explored. This is important especially along the stops lining the freeway.
--When oh whenever will the MCTD come out with a ‘fast pass’ card for adults and the disabled for travel in the County. Not only would it increase ridership, it would also speed up entry of and exit from the buses. Believe it, and they will come.
All this being said, I want to congratulate Amy Van Doren and her staff in working with the present limitations to produce some positive directions and new, necessary routes and additional service.
Sincerely,
Carl Macki

Green Forum -- June 20

FOR FRIENDS OF SUSTAINABLE NOVATO

Novatans will be interested in this large residential builder-to-builder green building forum June 20 in San Francisco as well as West Coast Green coming September 28-30.

That residential green building is now legitimized as mainstream and accepted by growing segments of the design and construction community underscores the wisdom of Novato's city government in getting there first last September with our mandatory "green points" system that ratifies the growing homebuilders' consensus.
Sustainable Novato hopes that this consensus will spur Novato's city staff and planning commission to set up an effective process to draft a commercial and municipal (government) section for the Novato ordinance, an effort that, we understand, has already begun.
We hope also that Novato city officials will be the first to raise green building possibilities with the designers and constructors of the new Safeway mega-store in Ignacio as well as continuing to press Whole Foods and Lalanne developers for all possible green building elements in its downtown mixed-used project.
As previously recommended, Incorporation of green building energy, design, materials and lighting standards in the city's voluntary guidelines for downtown Novato would also be appropriate.
-- Ed Mainland, Secretary, Sustainable Novato, 415-902-6365.

Barry Buckley

I was walking across the intersection of Bel Marin Keys Boulevard and Nave Drive, when the driver in a blue Karmann-Ghia convertible asked me if I would like a ride. Since it was quite a walk to my destination, I agreed and got in. It turned out that I knew the driver. He introduced himself as Barry Buckley, and I replied that I had spoken with him over the phone after reading about his race for the Board of Supervisor position in the Novato Advance over a month ago.

Barry told me of his SMART plank in his "platform"--he is a builder, after all, and we discussed how the trains would help telecommuting, as well as green building and the toxic sites still on Hamilton and conservation. Buckley said he was particularly interested in my advocacy of a Wi-Fi network for Novato; and how the trains could help implement that, if by nothing else, having the trains "hot zones."
Before he dropped me off, he met my mate, and invited us to watch or attend his debate that night at the School District Offices on Seventh Street. Sandy told him that he should visit New Beginnings Center, and that she would talk to the Director for him. I noted how there are many potential voters in the Hamilton area, who have not registered, and that it was possible for him to win the election, despite the long odds. I brought up the case of an college instructor of mine who became a United States Senator.

His Statement of Candidacy
"A resident of Marin County for over fifty
years, I hope to follow the public service example
of my great-greatgrandfather, Patrick Dundon,
who served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
I obtained a degree in Political Economy of Industrial
Societies from U.C. Berkeley and have been
in the construction business for twenty -five years.
"My long tenure as a resident of this county, as well
as my educational background and business experience, have given me
a broad perspective of the critical issues, both political and economic,
facing us.

SNIP:
"According to the survey results, the leading reason that builders
are considering green is that “It’s the right thing to do,”

Bernstein said, an indication of the industry’s strong links to the community.
Of those polled, 92% identified this factor as a very or somewhat
important influence behind the decision to go green.

Other prominent influences include: lowering lifecycle costs, such as energy
efficiencies and productivity increases, 87%; staying ahead of the
competition, 82%; expanding business with customers who are
interested in green building, 82%; and limiting exposure to liability
on such issues as water leaks and mold, 78%."

"After several years of slow but steady growth across the country, the
green home building movement — which applies innovative and
environmentally sensitive construction techniques and products to
reduce energy and water consumption and improve residential comfort
and safety — is barreling into the mainstream, according to a survey
of NAHB members in late January and early February by the association
and McGraw Hill Construction.
"Preliminary results released during NAHB’s Green Building Conference
in Albuquerque, N.M. on March 12-14 showed that there was a 20%
increase in 2005 among those in the home building community who are
focusing their attention on green building issues and that their
ranks are expected to increase by another 30% this year.
“'Green home building is at a tipping point among the builder
population,' said Harvey Bernstein, vice president of Industry
Analytics and Alliances for McGraw-Hill Construction. 'The data
indicates 2006 to 2007 is the time frame from which the builder
population moves from a majority less involved to more involved with
green building.'
"Ray Tonjes, chairman of the NAHB Green Building Subcommittee, noted
that the study opens new ground and new business opportunities for
NAHB members. 'NAHB has been in the vanguard of the voluntary
movement to increase the efficiency and quality of the American
home,' he said. 'This study suggests a viable path for the home
building community to educate the public about green building and
deliver a product that responds to the needs of the buyer as never
before.'
"Bernstein predicted that green building will boost its market share
from $7.4 billion and 2% of housing starts last year to $19-$38
billion and 5%-10% of residential construction activity in 2010.
'Within 10 years, everybody’s going to be building green,' he said.
'According to the survey results, the leading reason that builders are
considering green is that “It’s the right thing to do,” ' Bernstein
said, an indication of the industry’s strong links to the community.
Of those polled, 92% identified this factor as a very or somewhat
important influence behind the decision to go green.

"Other prominent influences include: lowering lifecycle costs, such as energy
efficiencies and productivity increases, 87%; staying ahead of the
competition, 82%; expanding business with customers who are
interested in green building, 82%; and limiting exposure to liability
on such issues as water leaks and mold, 78%.
"The leading factors triggering building firms to expand their green
home building activities were identified in the survey as: increases
in energy costs and utility rebates, 88%; consumer demand, 88%;
superior performance, 87%; codes, ordinances and regulations, 86%;
and competitive advantage, 83%.
"Starting costs and the unwillingness of consumers to pay additional
costs for a green home were identified as the leading obstacles to
firms becoming involved in green home building, rated as important by
82% and 79% of those surveyed, respectively.
"Also important were: uneducated consumers, 79%; codes, ordinances
and regulations, 72%; and a lack of awareness among consumers of
green products, 70%. Only 39% said that the perception of green building
as a fad and not something here to stay was a significant obstacle.
"Asked to indicate the importance of specific green home building
options, NAHB members participating in the survey identified
high-efficiency HVAC equipment as the top item, with 92% responding
that it was important.

"That was followed by low E-glass windows, 89%; HVAC for indoor air quality, 90%;
more energy-efficient appliances, 88%; reduced air infiltration, 86%;
hi-performance engineered wood products, 84%; above-code energy programs, 82%;

the minimization of site disruption, 82%; water-saving utilities such as dish and clothes
washers, 75%; storm water mitigation, 74%; formaldehyde-free finishes, 73%;
and water-conserving fixtures and faucets, 73%.
"Other highlights from the survey findings:
* Upgrading to green building increased the total cost of a
project by an average 10.6%. However, for builders active in green
building, the perceived cost increase was an average 8.7%, compared
to an average of 11.1% for those not involved.
* Green building certification programs have yet to take hold
in the residential market; only 3% of respondents said they were
certified and 80% said they were not. Nevertheless, 80% of builders
starting 10 homes a year or less and 71% of those starting more said
they would be interested in participating in voluntary green home
building certification.
* Ninety-five percent said they were using green friendly
building materials; 80% reported using OSB rather than plywood; 79%
said they were using engineered wood such as Tgi and glulam as an
alternative to dimensional lumber; and 54% said they were reducing
their construction waste.
* Eighty-nine percent responded that they were doing
something to preserve natural open space; 67% said they were
minimizing disruption to existing vegetation; and 64% said they were
preserving natural water drainage ways.
* Eighty-eight percent said they were taking steps to reduce
air filtration in their homes; 77% were using high-efficiency HVAC
equipment to achieve this; and 58% said they were using overhangs.
* Unlike commercial builders, home builders were able to
readily name leading brands of green products in various categories:
80% were able to name a brand in the house wrap category, where Tyvek
was most frequently named (66%); 76% knew an insulation brand, 29%
naming Owens-Corning; 75% were able to name a door and window brand,
15% citing Andersen and 11% Pella; 70% named an HVAC brand, 17% Trane
and 12% Carrier; and 67% knew a wood framing brand, 13% Trus joist,
9% TJI and 8% Boise Cascade.
"Bernstein said that his staff was busy compiling the survey data
right up to the Green Building Conference, and a final report should
be available in roughly the next couple of months."
