It aims to examine "the performance of policies and programmes in meeting challenges and capitalising on opportunities for progress" in providing clean water for all of the world's citizens, according to the organizers. While much of the focus is on the work of governments and nongovernmental organizations, the role of the private sector is always present: the growing concern over the impacts of bottled water; the use of scarce water in the production of biofuels; the privatization of water systems; and the often inefficient use of water for industrial processes. The latter was the subject of several sessions and events, including the release of a landmark tool for companies by the World Business Council on Sustainable Development. But such efforts are -- well, a drop in the bucket. Water will be a growing topic for companies in coming years, as climate change and growing populations further stress this precious resource. And companies that aren't measuring and analyzing their water use, and the implications of doing business in a world in which water is a constraint, may find themselves sitting high and dry. I have some great news! The pressure is building on the California Board of Forestry to severely restrict clearcutting in Jackson State Forest, our 50,000-acre redwood forest located just four hours from San Francisco and Sacramento.

If you haven't already done so, please help to save our publicly owned redwood forest!! Sending this prepared, editable letter will take only a few moments of your time.

In the latest development, the Board of Supervisors of Mendocino County, where Jackson Forest is located, unanimously voted on June 26, 2007 to support the position that clearcutting should be minimized and only done for clearly justified scientific research or forest health. They voted to tell the Board of Forestry to incorporate the recommendations of a Mendocino working group into Alternative G. The Campaign to Restore Jackson State Forest was intimately involved in the creation of these recommendation and their incorporation into public policy.

Here's more on the recommendations just endorsed by the Mendocino Supervisors: Last Summer, four senior members of the Mendocino County timber industry began meeting regularly with me and a representative of the Sierra Club. Our working group's goal, endorsed by the head of California's forestry department and the Board of Forestry, was to come to consensus agreement on a plan for Jackson State Forest. Our working group published our consensus recommendations on November 30, 2007.

Our recommendations would change the mission of Jackson Forest from solely timber production to research, restoration, habitat, and education. Timber harvesting in the forest, which would finance operations and repair past damage, would be carefully designed and implemented to maintain and improve forest health. Perhaps most importantly, a public advisory committee would become actively involved in design of a new long-term landscape plan and management plan for the forest.

Since that time our working group has been negotiating with the state to follow our consensus roadmap to resuming operation of our public redwood forest, where all operations have been halted by lawsuits since 2001.

The result is the new "Alternative G" for Jackson State Forest recently released by the Board of Forestry for public comment. This alternative incorporates many of the recommendations of the working group. Unfortunately, it falls short in a number of important respects -- most importantly it fails to minimize and require explicit justification and review for any clearcuts.

In a recent letter, the Mendocino working group emphasized its recommendation that clearcut variations be limited to the minimum that can be justified for forest research and forest health. The limited clearcuts allowed under this proposal would allow the forest to fulfill its research goals without detracting from the important goals of restoration, wildlife, recreation, and human enjoyment.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Feb. 5, 2007 -- A future marred by stronger storms, rising sea levels and a dramatic increase in global temperatures unless stronger efforts are made to reduce carbon emissions is depicted in the new report by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. But with today's business models generating tremendous strain on the environment, how can free-market capitalism be reconciled with the need for more sustainable business practices? MIT Sloan School of Management is responding with the launch of its new Laboratory for Sustainable Business (S-Lab) on February 7, 2007. S-Lab is the latest in new, experimental curricula debuting at MIT Sloan, which includes, among others, Conversations with Jack Welch and the Entrepreneurship & Innovation Certificate Program. "As a world leader in business, engineering and science, MIT is uniquely positioned to define the risks and opportunities involved in creating sustainability-based business models for the future," says MIT Sloan Prof. Richard Locke, one of six leading professors at the business school who collaborated in the creation of the course. S-Lab recognizes climate change as one of the most daunting challenges mankind faces in creating a sustainable society, says Locke. "A critical issue for global warming is the ways in which the risks are communicated, and the framing of the solutions, both for specific organizations and for communities," he says. "S-Lab will teach future CEOs and business leaders the challenges of implementation and how the science of sustainability can be best communicated to policymakers and citizens." Key to addressing sustainability, says Locke, is in re-defining it. "Up until now we have considered aspects of sustainability -- climate, energy, water, food, poverty, and social development -- in isolation," he says. "S-Lab is developing an integrated framework to consider the system-wide dynamics of human society along with tools and methodologies for measuring and monitoring sustainability efforts and their applications." Interactive computer-based simulations will enable students to play the role of entrepreneurs seeking to maximize their profits investing in companies that impact the environment. In the process, students will experience first hand the challenges of applying renewable resources within the framework of existing policies and business models. They will then have the opportunity to experiment with re-shaping these external factors in a manner that promotes both sustainability and the bottom line. In another exercise, S-Lab will look at an attempt by Conoco-Phillips, Inc. to win an oil development contract in Ecuador's tropical rain forest. Message from Carl Pope of the Sierra Club

Dear Sierra Club Supporter: Looking at yesterday's election results, I can say unequivocally that the environment won a resounding victory -- a victory that thousands of Sierra Club staff, volunteers, and supporters worked hard to achieve. America's voters made it clear that they want change and new leadership that will move our nation in a dramatically different direction. A big part of that demand for change is about enacting smart energy solutions that will decrease our dependence on oil, clean up our environment, curb global warming, and create jobs. And candidates at all levels heard the people. Never before have so many candidates -- of both parties -- run on energy issues or shown such commitment to the development of new energy sources, policies, and practices. Bottom line: Voters yesterday elected new local, state, and national leaders who are ready to take us forward. America elected a greener U.S. House, a greener U.S. Senate, several greener Governors, and gave a green light to move in the direction of a new energy future. Green candidates were elected at every level of government and in every region in the country. With so many wonderful victories for the environment, it's hard to recognize them all, but here are a few worth highlighting: Ted Strickland in Ohio was elected to replace Bob Taft as Governor. Strickland has a detailed strategy to move Ohio from the renewable energy 'hall of shame' to the head of the class. He plans to offer incentives to green manufacturers to create a regulatory environment that will attract new capital and new businesses to the state. Bill Ritter was elected Governor of Colorado. He will promote Colorado's unique homegrown blend of wind, solar, and agricultural energy supplies to put the state on the cutting edge of clean energy technology nationwide. Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum -- who voted against a sound energy policy, voted against renewable energy, and voted against protecting our children from dangerous mercury emissions -- was soundly defeated. Pennsylvania's new Senator-elect Bob Casey recognizes global warming as a real, immediate threat and supports federal action to solve the problem. In the House, new greener Members of Congress were elected in every region of the country. We have gained at least 20 new seats where an anti-environment incumbent was replaced by a green challenger. Finally, we had our biggest victory with the defeat of Richard Pombo in California. Sierra Club volunteers, myself included, were working right up to the last minute to turn out the vote for Jerry McNerney. Our ability to defeat an extreme anti-environmental incumbent, when no one else in the country believed the race to be in play, shows the power of these issues with voters and the power of the environmental movement in holding elected officials accountable. The Sacramento Bee reported this morning that even the ousted candidate recognized this fact: "Pombo ... has contended that whatever difficulties his reelection drive encountered had little to do with Iraq or Abramoff, and more to do with concerted efforts of environmental groups and other critics who targeted his race." Truthfully, the Sierra Club played a huge role in helping to shape this environmental majority -- from laying the initial groundwork against Pombo in the summer of 2005 to mobilizing our national grassroots network to educate their neighbors about these issues to encouraging folks to get out and vote. Moyers on America: Is God Green?

Tonight, Moyers on America: Is God Green? premieres on PBS - Wednesday,
October 11 at 9PM (check local listings). The documentary looks at the
significant implications of a debate among politically powerful
conservative evangelical Christians over the handling of the
environment.

"Is God Green?"
PBS Airdate: Wednesday, October 11 at 9 p.m. (check local listings). 60

A new holy war is growing within the evangelical community, with stakes
for the earth and American politics. For over a decade liberal
Christians have made the environment a moral commitment. Now some
conservative evangelicals as well are standing up for the earth as a
Biblical imperative of stewardship. From a dynamic conservative church
in Boise, Idaho to an evangelical activist group known as Christians
for the Mountains in West Virginia, grassroots believers are speaking out.
So are some conservative evangelical leaders at the national level who
have called for action to stop global warming. But they are being met
head-on with opposition from religious right political figures like
Jerry Falwell and James Dobson, who are pillars of the right-wing
coalition that adamantly supports the Bush administration in
downplaying the threat of global warming. The political stakes are high: three
out of every four self-identified white evangelical voters cast their
ballots for George W. Bush in 2004. The program explores how a serious
split among conservative evangelicals over the environment and global
warming could reshape American politics.
